Tasting Notes
This is hedonistic winemaking at its finest—dark black and red berry fruits mingle with graphite, new leather, smoke and spice, all underscored by the distinctive smell of the sea that Waiheke Island imparts. The 2021 presents as fruit-forward and rich on first pour, but reveals layers of complexity as you journey through the bottle.
Full-bodied and structured, with firm tannins and bright acidity creating a taut, youthful mouthfeel that promises excellent cellaring potential. Perfect with aged beef, game meats, or strong cheeses—this is a wine that demands serious food and conversation.
Excellent - Cameron Douglas MS awarded 95 points, praising its "power and concentration" with optimal drinking from 2028 through 2038.
The Blend
A sophisticated five-grape Bordeaux-style blend: 45% Cabernet Franc provides the backbone, 25% Merlot adds richness, 11% Petit Verdot contributes structure and spice, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon brings power, and 9% Malbec delivers colour and density. Cameron Douglas MS noted the "dark skinned plums and blackberry, chocolate and brown baking spices, with a lick of salt and long finish."
About Man O' War
Located on Waiheke Island's stunning coastline, Man O' War is steeped in maritime history dating back to early Polynesian adventurers. This protected cove has provided safe harbour during many rough seas, earning recognition from navigators in the late 1700s who noted the magnificent Kauri trees—ideal for crafting masts for naval Man O' War warships.
Today, the winery honours this heritage by producing restaurant-quality wines that capture the unique terroir of Waiheke Island, where sea breezes and volcanic soils create ideal conditions for premium red wine production.
