The Art of the Mezze Platter

Quick, casual entertaining is a must nowadays — it can take the stress out of getting together with friends. Make or buy as many elements as your schedule allows. (Links to more recipes on The Wine List at the bottom of the article.)

A mezze platter is the ultimate in effortless entertaining. Inspired by Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine, mezze is all about bold flavours, fresh ingredients, and casual sharing.

Building the Perfect Mezze Platter

  • Cheese & dairy: feta, halloumi, or whipped ricotta
  • Dips: hummus, tzatziki, or baba ganoush
  • Fresh & pickled vegetables: cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and pickled onions
  • Protein: spiced lamb skewers, falafel, or grilled prawns
  • Breads & crackers: pita bread, lavosh, or warm flatbreads
  • Something sweet: honey-drizzled figs or dates

1. Spiced Lamb Skewers

A perfect balance of savoury and spice, these skewers are a must-have on any mezze board.

  • 500g minced NZ lamb
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1-2 tsp NZ sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Approx. 10 skewers (presoak these if using the BBQ, to prevent them burning)
  1. Mix all ingredients and form about 10 small portions, roughly 2 tablespoons each. Squeeze onto small skewers in sausage shapes.
  2. Grill or pan-fry for 2-3 minutes per side.
  3. Serve with tzatziki and warm pita.

2. Whipped Feta & Honey Dip

Salty, creamy, and a touch of sweetness — this dip is mezze perfection.

  • 200g feta cheese
  • 4 tbsp Greek yoghurt
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp honey (warm for 20 seconds in the microwave so it drizzles)
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  1. Blend feta, yoghurt, lemon zest and olive oil until smooth.
  2. Drizzle with honey before serving.
  3. Scoop up with warm pita or fresh veggies.

Hosting is made easy, delicious, and wine-worthy!
