We know "Ponsonby Road Bistro" is a favourite of The Wine List customers as it was one of our most tipped restaurants during our COVID years "Tip a Restaurant" campaign.
​

Reliably serving sophisticated bistro food for the last ten years, these guys are "safe hands" for your night out.  This restaurant is on my family’s’ list of "great steak" places.  A good wine at the bar with an entrée will sort out any weeknight in need of a lift (let them know if you’re off to a film down the road or a gig in town next). 


With a small menu that changes regularly and a strong wine list, the bistro's style is consistent and will keep you coming back.

This stylish and welcoming joint with an outstanding modern French bistro-inspired menu. It is the place to be. These guys run a different lunch menu and a Sunday Roast which I have had excellent reports about.  They have only been open a short while and have already gathered some great reviews.  With the Herald calling it one of the best openings of 2024 and an equally great overview from The Urban List.
South Canterbury, Fish Tail Indian, Jasmine Thai, High Country Salmon Farm

A quick round-up of the eateries we enjoyed on our South Canterbury trip this year.  They know their wine in this region so no surprises Dicey on all the menus.  Driving around South Can and Central Otago was a continuous joy seeing grapes and vineyards we are proud to sell everywhere we looked.
Little Sicily at The Trident Taverna Onehunga

Without a doubt a must-visit addition to the Auckland food scene. 

From auspicious and trendy beginnings in a food truck behind music studios in Penrose, Little Sicily now has a permanent home in a main road Onehunga pub.

The address is 190 Onehunga Mall (in the old sense of the word, i.e main street) Parking is around the back, but we found plenty of parking on the street on a Sunday.

  • Many of you know Laura from talking through your orders over the phone. Or you already get her great emails.

    Laura came to The Wine List from her background as a food writer. Before having her 3 girls Laura published 2 cookbooks, spent 3 years writing a weekly column with the Sunday Star Times. Appeared as a regular on Good Morning TV and wrote recipes and styled food photos for numerous magazines and food companies. She trained at Leith’s School of Food and Wine in London as a chef.  Worked as a chef here and in AU, had a catering company and ran the Nestle New Zealand Test Kitchen.
