Collection: Nevis Bluff

Nevis Bluff's single-vineyard wines are grown at the L'Attitude Vineyard in the Pisa sub-region of the Cromwell Basin, planted in Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. Nevis Bluff has long been known as Central Otago's 'Pinot Specialist', with a quiet dedication to distinctive, characterful wines.

Nevis Bluff has recently passed the winemaking baton. For many years the wines were crafted by the highly regarded Dean Shaw, and from the 2024 vintage they are made by renowned Central Otago winemaker Matt Connell. Two careful, low-intervention hands, one vineyard, and the same commitment to letting the site speak.

The Winemakers

Dean Shaw (through to the 2023 vintage)

Dean is a highly regarded and very experienced New Zealand winemaker, a character with a droll sense of humour and an absolute passion for Pinot Noir, who created the Nevis Bluff wines as part of The Central Otago Wine Company (COWCo) in Cromwell. With a postgraduate degree in Viticulture and Wine Science from Lincoln University, he first came to Central Otago to work at Rippon Vineyard with Clotilde Chauvet in 1994 and 1995, spent two years at Giesen alongside Rudi Bauer, and worked at Blackridge Estate in Alexandra before settling in Cromwell as a partner in COWCo. His approach was a natural one: intervene as little as possible, use wild yeasts, and, in true Dean fashion, serenade the wine with a stereo system most nightclubs would envy. The bottles in this collection carry his signature, and we're grateful for the reputation he built.

Matt Connell (from the 2024 vintage)

Matt is an award-winning Central Otago winemaker with more than twenty years in the region and a name for expressive, site-driven Pinot. He has made wines for some of Central's standout labels over the years, including Peregrine, Olssen's and McArthur Ridge, and under his own label his 'Rendition' Pinot Noir was named Champion Wine of Show at the 2018 New Zealand International Wine Show. The early signs at Nevis Bluff are excellent: the first single-vineyard Pinot under his hand took 98 points and a Double Gold at the 2025 New Zealand International Wine Show.

One vineyard, two trusted winemakers, and a single ambition: wines that reflect the character of their Pisa terroir as faithfully as possible.
