Gisborne | Rare NZ Carménère | Medium-Bodied and Elegant
Tasting Notes
Rich inky purple. Aromas of crushed black berries, liquorice and anise spice. A palate of purple velvet presents complex flavours of salted molasses caramel, liquorice and Doris plum syrup.
A plush, velvety Gisborne Carménère with dark fruit, liquorice and spice.
Why you'll love it: a genuine rarity, one of very few New Zealand Carménères, supple and richly flavoured, brilliant with bold, spiced food.
The Varietal
Originally from France, Carménère found its true home in Chile, where it was famously mistaken for Merlot for decades until DNA testing revealed its true identity. This heritage grape delivers the supple character Merlot lovers adore, enhanced by a distinctive herbaceous complexity. Its strong association with Chilean cuisine makes it particularly brilliant with spiced dishes and chilli-based cooking.
About TW Wines
Paul Tietjen and Geordie Witters founded TW Wines in 1998, growing and hand-crafting their wines along The Golden Slope, Gisborne's very own Côte d'Or. Their wines epitomise what the world has come to expect of New Zealand wine: power, complexity, elegance and excellent cellaring potential.
Perfect with spiced beef, lamb shoulder, chilli-based dishes, or aged cheeses.
