REVIEWS:

  •  93 James Suckling    This has aromas of grilled pineapple, papaya and chamomile with some distinct smoky and ashy undertones. Medium-bodied with bright acidity. Flavorful, with a fantastic flinty and smoky character.
  • 92 The 2021 Etna Bianco is fresh and nicely balanced with white peach and grapefruit that are contrasted against crushed mineral and volcanic ash. This crisp white wine proves highly drinkable and enjoyable thanks to that almost salty back end that would pair with fried shrimp or Thai spring rolls. It ages on the fine lees for six months. Fruit is sourced from across three contrade: Arrigo (in Linguaglossa), Verzella and Pietramarina.
  • 93 Hints of sea salt and savoury herbs weave through this wine, lending depth and complexity to the flavours of crisp green apple and crystalized lemon. It balances lively citrus tones with Etna’s signature smoke and salinity, remaining fresh and firm through the finish.
  • 92 Falstaff    Bright straw yellow with golden reflections. On the nose, there are notes of tropical fruit, orange peel, ripe apple and some smoke. On the palate, it is very mineral, fresh and salty, animated to drink, balanced, long finish.

What is a Carricante?  white wine indigenous to Sicily, Italy. This late-ripening vine is the main variety used in the Etna DOC. It is usually found blended with Catarratto and Minella Bianca. As a varietal wine, Carricante produces a fresh, straw-yellow, lightly fragrant white wine.

About Etna Bianco at Alta Mora:    Carricante, a native variety espalier-grown over 6 hectares of vines at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. Area of production: Milo, Praino Contrada south side and Castiglione di Sicilia in the Verzella Contrada, where the freshness of the land allows full ripening of the Carricante without altering its aromas.

What is DOC and DOCG?

DOC - denominazione di origine controllata or designation of controlled origin.”

There are 329 different DOCs in Italy, covering many types of wine. Each DOC has its own rules about permitted grape varieties, maximum harvest yields, and aging requirements.

DOCGDenominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita

This is the highest quality level. This classification was created in 1980 DOCG wines are to be the best of what Italian wines can offer. There are now 74 DOCG wines in Italy, most of them concentrated in the regions of Piemonte, Tuscany, and the Veneto.

There are also,

VdTVino da Tavola. Generally regarded as "table wine", not something that makes it onto the export market.  Can be from grapes grown anywhere in Italy

and IGTIndicazione Geografica Tipica. These wines come from a specific wine-growing region but may not meet all the criteria of the DOC.  Some great wines can be in this category based on what the vineyard is up to.  It takes one to know one.
