What is DOC and DOCG?
DOC - denominazione di origine controllata or designation of controlled origin.”
There are 329 different DOCs in Italy, covering many types of wine. Each DOC has its own rules about permitted grape varieties, maximum harvest yields, and aging requirements.
DOCG - Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita
This is the highest quality level. This classification was created in 1980 DOCG wines are to be the best of what Italian wines can offer. There are now 74 DOCG wines in Italy, most of them concentrated in the regions of Piemonte, Tuscany, and the Veneto.
There are also,
VdT - Vino da Tavola. Generally regarded as "table wine", not something that makes it onto the export market. Can be from grapes grown anywhere in Italy
and IGT - Indicazione Geografica Tipica. These wines come from a specific wine-growing region but may not meet all the criteria of the DOC. Some great wines can be in this category based on what the vineyard is up to. It takes one to know one.
