Matané Primitivo is a warm, fruit-forward red from Salento in Puglia, the sun-baked heel of Italy, made from 100% Primitivo.
Puglia Primitivo | Salento | Bold and Fruit-Forward
Tasting Notes
Very deep ruby red with violet reflections. The intense aroma and flavours of plum, cherry, rosemary, vanilla and peppery spice are confirmed by a well-balanced, full finish.
Southern Italian sunshine in a glass: ripe, spicy and generous.
Why you'll love it: This is a crowd-pleasing red for cooler evenings, all ripe dark fruit, warm spice and soft tannins. If you enjoy a generous Zinfandel or Shiraz, Primitivo will feel like home.
The Grape
Primitivo is Puglia's great red grape, genetically the same variety as California's Zinfandel. In the heat of Salento it ripens early and deeply, giving rich, brambly wines full of plum and spice with soft, rounded tannins.
About Matané
Matané was founded in 2008 by the Empson family, long-established importers of fine Italian wine, to showcase the potential of Puglia in Italy's deep south. Based in Salento, between the Adriatic and Ionian seas, the project celebrates the region's native grapes, above all Primitivo and Negroamaro, grown on old bush-trained vines in red, sun-baked soil. The name is a tribute to the family, Maria, Tara and Neil, and the wines are warm, generous and full of southern character.
Perfect with red meat, duck, game, smoked fish, or hard cheeses. Its ripe fruit and spice stand up to rich, smoky and gamey flavours.
