About the Chianti Region
Chianti, the red wine of central Tuscany Italy, is a product of Sangiovese grapes. Historically, it was served in a straw basket-wrapped flask called a fiasco, but most Chianti wines now come in standard-shaped bottles.
What is IGT? IGT is short for 'Indicazione Geografica Tipica' Established in 1992, IGTs provide a step-up from the everyday Vino da Tavola (VdT), offering high-caliber wines that don’t meet the DOC and DOCG guidelines.
Look no further than so-called Super Tuscans for a perfect example. Now, IGTs welcome wines with a more 'international' flavor, ones that skip the winemaking requirements and grape varieties demanded by DOCs and DOCGs. With over 120 IGTs, Italy rocks! Other examples: Toscana IGT; Veneto IGT; Puglia IGT; Isola dei Nuraghi IGT.
